Surrender of Dog Requests to Peppertree Rescue

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND IN ITS ENTIRETY SO THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING SURRENDER OF YOUR DOG TO PEPPERTREE

As Peppertree has grown and been in operation for a number of years now, we are receiving more and more requests to take into our programs dogs that come from owners and private individuals. In the past Peppertree has been able to accommodate some of these requests when a dog has passed our evaluation process. However, our primary focus has also been to take in dogs from shelters for which Peppertree was the last chance for the dog. With limited openings in our all-volunteer rescue which operates out of our homes and paid kennel space, since we have no physical facility, coupled with an increasing number of owners and private individuals requesting Peppertree to take in dogs far beyond what we could ever handle, we have revised our surrender policy for owners and private individuals.

First, and foremost, do not depend on any one individual or group to help you re-home your dog. The primarily responsibility is yours as the owner or individual surrendering the dog to pursue all options. See How to Find a Home for Your Dog which provides detailed options and steps on re-homing your dog.

Second, if you have internet access or know someone that does, do a search for purebred rescues in your geographical area if your dog is a purebred or an all-breed group if the dog is of mixed breed. There are no guarantees that any group may be able to take your dog into their program, but the more contacts you make the better.

Third, if you are unable to re-home your dog privately or via a rescue group and you can not keep the dog any longer take your dog to your shelter. In Albany and Rensselaer Counties, the local shelter is Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society in Menands, New York. However, like any organization that deals with the overpopulation of dogs (or cats) no promises on ultimately finding a new home can be made.

Peppertree can assist in the process if you are willing to complete an Application to Surrender and send it to us for our review. After we have received the application, we will call or e-mail you back with one of two options, based on information provided in the application:

  1. If the dog is not one that Peppertree would consider taking in based on our temperament criteria. However, if you provide a description of the dog and a digital picture of the dog, we will list on our Neighbor's Corner section of our web site with your name and contact information (telephone number and/or e-mail address).
  2. If the dog is one that Peppertree would take in from a shelter based on our temperament criteria, you can attend a clinic that Peppertree holds (our clinic schedule is provided at: http://www.peppertree.org/clinic.php) during the LAST HOUR of the clinic, a Peppertree evaluator will evaluate the dog and if the dog passes the evaluation Peppertree will post a description and picture on our Owner Dogs Section of our web site. The benefit of this approach is that the dog has an independent evaluation as noted on our web site:
    • "PRIVATELY-OWNED DOGS EVALUATED BY PEPPERTREE The dogs are still living with their owners but need to find a new home. Each of these dogs has been evaluated by Peppertree and -- based on that evaluation and on information from the owner -- we consider them as qualified to be taken into our program.... if we had room. (We must note, however, that we do not have the detailed knowledge that we gain about dogs that are actually in the program and in our own foster homes.)"

Your name and contact information (telephone number and/or e-mail address) would be listed. IF you wish for Peppertree to screen any applicants, Peppertree Rescue would be listed as the contact. However this option must be agreed to by both the surrendering party and Peppertree. And if this option is agreed to, Peppertree will require a Peppertree Contract and our standard adoption fee from any applicant that we screened and forwarded to you whom ended up adopting the dog.

IN VERY RARE INSTANCES, DEPENDING ON THE RESULT OF THE EVALUATION AND THE AVAILABILITY OF A FOSTER HOME, PEPPERTREE MAY TAKE A DOG INTO OUR PROGRAM FROM THE OWNER.

THE APPLICATION TO SURRENDER IS AT http://www.peppertree.org/forms.php.
