Who We Are

Peppertree Rescue, Inc. is an all-volunteer not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation dedicated to saving Golden Retrievers and dogs of good temperament that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners or otherwise in need of homes. We work together with other local rescues, shelters, and animal control.

We place our dogs into temporary foster homes where they are socialized, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for any medical or behavioral conditions which would otherwise limit their adoptability.

We actively seek out permanent quality homes for these deserving animals through our volunteer network, adoption web page, social media, and weekend adoption events.

Founded in 1999, Peppertree Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation supported completely by donations, adoption fees, and grants. Our all-volunteer, home-based organization guarantees that your donations are completely focused on saving dogs.

Peppertree Rescue also educates the public about the importance of spay/neuter, socialization and training.  We encourage people looking for a companion animal to consider only two sources:

  • adopting a dog from a rescue, shelter, or private party; or
  • getting a puppy or older dog from a responsible breeder – – one who guarantees in writing that they will always take back and lovingly care for their dogs so the dog never has to be rescued.

Whether you are visiting our site in hopes of adopting, volunteering, or donating – welcome and thank you for your support.

How we select our dogs

Because we are a recognized Golden Retriever rescue through the Golden Retriever Club of America National Rescue Committee we fulfill our obligation to accept whenever possible and give advice regarding any Golden Retriever in our area.

For all other dogs we give priority to dogs of good temperament who are:
– facing euthanasia
– living in shelters or pounds or in untenable living situations

We also accommodate owner surrenders to keep those dogs from facing such fates and to allow them to go from one home to another with less disruption.

We have developed screening criteria and procedures that help us identify dogs with good temperament who can successfully become beloved family members.

Any dog, of whatever breed or mix, that exhibits the character and temperament commonly associated with a Golden Retriever temperament – friendliness, intelligence, and a peaceful, loving nature – can qualify for our program.

Not all of our dogs are “perfect.” Many come with baggage, even trauma, from previous life experiences. And sometime our screening mechanisms will not identify certain issues, especially those that are situation specific, and we will have a dog with one or more genuine problems. We are as honest as possible about the characteristics of our dogs, and any flaws or limitations they may exhibit. We also work with our adopters to help them and their new family member best adjust to each other.

Like a good breeder, we stand behind our dogs and require that they be returned to us in the event that they cannot – at any time – remain in their new home.
